Tips
Some of what seems to be the most relevant advice we’ve picked up along the way:
Everyone you ask for advice will tell you something different to what you have already heard.
You can’t plan too far in advance.
It doesn’t matter how far in advance you plan, you will still be rushed prior to actual departure.
Pay close attention to security.
You don’t need to pack the proverbial kitchen sink (you can buy toiletries and toilet rolls in most parts of the world).
Single purpose items are not as valuable as those that have more than one use.
Respect the culture and religions of the places you visit.
Familiar rules of communication will be lost to you! A nod does not always mean yes. Showing the soles of your feet or shoes in Azerbaijan is the height of rudeness (as Paul and Martin found out when they went there in 2007).
And if all else fails, wear sunscreen (Baz Lurhmann)
